Introducing the Next S-Curve

"Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else." - Fred Rogers

Leave it to Mr. Rogers to describe with child-like simplicity the idea of moving on to the next S-curve!

What exactly is an S-curve?

The term S-curve reflects the graphical representation of a mathematical model for growth found in nature. The Logistic curve represents growth in biology, such as yeast and bacteria, and can be applied to many fields of study with similar predictive value. For example, the proverbial ‘learning curve’ is in fact an S-curve. It is characterized by a flat to slight slope in the beginning, then a dramatic ascent of growth, followed by slowing of growth, leading to stagnation or decay.

Managing S-Curves

Mr. Rogers profoundly describes the feeling of the transition from the end of one S-curve to the beginning of the next. It is a time characterized by both uncertainty and excitement, full of hopeful anticipation, and a little anxiety. In business, it is important to manage s-curves so that growth will continue. Investment begins way ahead of the apex of growth. In other words, we must be thinking about, creating and implementing 'what’s next' before we extract all value out of the current proposition.

Creating the Next S-curve

Do not despise small beginnings. The beginning of a new S-curve is always a humbling experience. It requires a different mindset than the machine that drives the current business we are in today. Previous success is a necessary input to the next S-Curve, but it is clearly not sufficient on its own. There is a portion of new growth that must come forward, or more likely emerge. Developing these new S-curves requires a growth mindset and a child-like curiosity and vulnerability. This is a time for discovery. For learning from the past and creating new futures. It is a time for dreaming, and systematically breaking down the dreams into action steps that create new possibilities.
